Two Month Checkup

Today we had the dreaded 2 month doctors visit. Dreaded because it included shots! Everything looked pretty good today. She was a petite 9 pounds even! I still can't wrap my head around the fact that lots of babies are born at 9 pounds, scary!! (ahem, Eric). Her doctor was impressed with her muscle tone too, which I was quite proud of (yeah I know it's not like I did anything, it's just Lilly is awesome). She was a little abusive though to her doctor - kicking and swatting like a crazy person! Oh well, what are you gonna do?

To the scary part, the shots: The first vaccine was a tasty drink, yummy. The first shot, look of shock on our face, but we can handle it because mommy's right here. Second shot, oh no waaaaaaaah. Third shot, what shot too busy with the second shot!

Luckily, I brought my mom with me, mostly for moral support for me! Nothing like a grandma to make everything all better. Lilly was passed out in 20 minutes with her grandma holding her, ahhhh. I don't know what my mom does, but she has a sedating effect on kids! I challenge you, send any kid her way and they will be passed out for hours! It's her turn babysitting this week and every time I come home Lilly's passed out on the couch. What is this magic gift?

Back to Work

So I had my first day back to work today. It was kinda sad, I missed my little Lilly all day long! I was expecting a slow day, since apparantly it has been slow there lately and the receptionist hadn't scheduled me any appointments. But I managed to scrounge up some appointments and ended up staying out till 5:30 with work.

Also, I forgot what 99 degrees feels like! Ah, really it's getting old, where's fall? Oh yeah, I forgot, seasons don't exist here. Oh well. It wasn't too bad though, it sure beats 99 degrees and pregnant. I actually wore jeans and wasn't miserable. I remember that last month pregnant, I was physically not capable of wearing jeans or pants; it was shorts only. I just couldn't stand the heat, usually I hustled through my work every morning to try to get done by lunchtime. It's nice to have my cold natured self back!!

Another thing, it was a little difficult focusing today! It was weird, I would be talking to clients and asking questions, but whatever they were yapping about would go in one ear and out the other! It was horrible, a couple times I had to be like I am soooo sorry, but can you tell me blah blah blah again! I'll just blame it on post pregnancy hormones... I wonder how long I can abuse that excuse! I seriously had to make an effort to actually LISTEN after I asked a question, haha. I was talking to another associate, she said that she was the same way when she came back after her babies were born; so it's not just me.

Well, as for Lilly, she did great today. She hung out with Grandma Jones all day. I believe they must of been playing hard all day because I came home to a passed out baby. Check her out here - she looks like a "person"! Look at her in that giant bed! Yeah I know your not supposed to put babies on pillows or with blankets, blah blah, but she really likes to take her naps in her mommy and daddy's bed!

Now that is a tired baby! Thanks Grandma J.

One more thing, my sister sent me this video of Isabel riding her bike! She finally has it down pat! I am sooo amazed since she is only 2 1/2 years old, you can really tell she is quite proud of herself in the video. And check it out, her little feet are strapped to the pedals :) Sorry the link button isn't working, so you have to copy and paste.

Cause we are living in a material world...

I am a material girl!

Oh the joy of little girls begins! We get to buy the CUTEST clothes.

Mysteriously, with ALL the clothes people have gotten us and all the hand me downs, we have a gap in clothes in the 0 - 3 month size, in particular bottoms. She is still mostly in newborn clothes, but her bottoms are either ginormous or give her love handles. So we went to Target the other day and bought some skirts and pants. There is SO much cute stuff there! Eric thinks I'm crazy. Here we are showing off our cool new skirt. Yeah I know she looks like a little old lady in the top picture, but I can't help myself.

And guess who social smiles now!

Stay tuned for more cute outfit pictures!

Here I am

Here I am fans. I have had one heck of a week. Between school and a sick baby I have been super busy and stressed out a bit, which for me to be stressed out you know I've got to be feeling some pressure. I'll fill you all in on a little of what's been filling up my week.

For starters, apparently I have brought illness upon my house. I got a sore throat almost two weeks ago but it wasn't anything too bad. I sucked on some cough drops for a few days and got over it. Then all heck broke loose. Mari got the sore throat plus congested sinuses and all that good stuff. Then, Lilly completely stopped breastfeeding at night and her sleeping went to crap. She was doing so well breastfeeding every night so her momma didn't have to get out of bed and she was getting into a routine of sleeping 6 hours at a stretch each night and I apparently ruined it. Now she hasn't breastfed in about 4 days and hasn't slept for more than one hour at a time. We figured Lilly must have gotten what we had so Mari took her to the pediatrician today, and sure enough she has some kind of virus, nothing serious fortunately, but there's not really any treatment for it and she was told it could last up to 2 weeks. Sweet. I've been worried about Mari's sanity lately but I've successfully managed to get her out of the house to ride her horse twice this week. She always comes back a happier person. On a side note Lilly weighed in at a whopping 8lbs 11oz today. She's at the 50 percentile for her weight for ds babies and 95% for her height. Talk about tall and skinny. Compared to a non-ds baby, she's less than 3% for weight and 20% for height. In other words, just perfect.

Another big stresser for me this week has been this numerical methods class. I had written it off at the beginning of the semester as an easy class since most of it is done using a computer program and I'm typically quick to pick up on that stuff. The assignments he gave us this week were insane. Plus, you have to have the computer program to do the work. I don't have it so I've had to spend extra time at school this week. More than half of the class has dropped out already, I think there are 5 of us left. The worst part is this class probably doesn't have to be this hard. But, we've heard enough stories from our professor about the all-nighters his professors made him do that I can understand why we're getting this treatment. Thanks a lot teacher.

I have been thrown off all week from my creative writing class on Tuesday. It was my day to share a couple of my pieces with the class and get critiqued. We've done a few of the other students pieces already and they were very hard reading since a lot of them don't believe in punctuation or paragraphs. I wasn't expecting a whole lot, but I certainly wasn't expecting what I got. Apparently, I'm not as good a writer as some people have been telling me I was. I had one person straight out tell me they didn't like my short story. She said it needed a murder or an alien abduction to make it more interesting. Another woman told me I had several "grammical errors." When asked where they were exactly she could only find one, which the teacher disagreed with her on and said I had it fine. My teacher actually said my short story was pretty good. However, and a big however, he also said that my poem "Little Girl" (Mari posted it a few days ago) sounded like it was written by a pedophile because of the way I worded some of it. At that point I was getting sick to my stomache. Even though I shouldn't care too much since I'm no english major or anything it still bothered me and it was on my mind most of the week.

On a higher note, I took a test in my differential equations class on Monday. It's basically equivalent to calculus 4 at most colleges but they don't call it that here. It was our first test and I got an 83. I wasn't too pumped up about the grade until the professor told the class that only 12 out of 22 passed the test. I figured that put me in the top 6 or 7 in the class probably. I'll take it.

I did something today I've never done before. I bought a soccer ball. I played when I was a kid but I never actually bought a ball, that's what parents are for at that age. Anyway, the reason I bought a soccer ball is because I've signed up to coach a soccer team. It was a split second decision. Mari's dad was at the house a few days ago and mentioned to her that they didn't have a coach for Michael's(Mari's brother) soccer team. They only have one practice and one game per week so it's not too demanding. So, pending the results of my background check, I'll be coaching the team. They're 13-14 year olds and they probably know more about soccer than I do but I've got an ace up my sleeve. My sister Lindsay has agreed to help me out, I'm not sure why just yet but she can't back out now. Lindsay played all through high school and had a few colleges interested in giving her scholarships but she wisely picked her education over soccer. I only found out after I signed up that the season starts this week. That means the first practice is tomorrow and our first game is on Saturday. Wish us luck.

And for your Lilly fill for the day here is a picture, but I want to ask you one thing first. Is Lilly laying on her stomach, or on her back?

2010 Buddy Walk

I've been meaning to post about the 2010 Buddy Walk. It is a walk held to promote awareness about Down syndrome. There will be a walk in Columbia at Saluda Shoals Park on October 17, 2010. We created a team for Lilly - Team Lilly Pad! As a team we are working on helping Family Connections of SC fundraise for the big event. Donations go towards Family Connections of SC and also to Down syndrome research through the National Down Syndrome Society. Family Connections is a great organization that helps support families in South Carolina with special needs children (not just Down syndrome). Lilly has already done a great job fundraising, she has raised $815 in just a short period of time. Thank you to those who have helped her! Even if you can't donate we would love to see you there to support our Lilly Pad!

There will not only be the fun walk, but there will be a lot of kid activities (ie face painting, ponies, games, etc). You can also come and enjoy the beautiful park as well - apparantly there are tons of really nice walking and hiking trails. Show your support for Lilly! Please visit Lilly's fundraising page if you would like to donate: http://www.firstgiving.com/lillypad Or you can click on the First Giving widget I added on the left of this page.

Again thanks to everyone for all your support! And let us know if you plan on coming, we are making team shirts for everyone to wear!

Back in the Saddle

So as of last week I've been back riding again!! I haven't ridden since May and it seems like a lifetime. Belmont is still in Blythewood, but I've made time to go and ride a few times already. Here's a picture of one of our first rides back. He's been doing great and has managed to be fairly polite of a horse (is he finally growing up? I'm not holding my breath). Maybe we'll manage to make it to the show here in town in November? We'll see...

I know the grandmas care more about what's going on in Lilly's life. She's doing awesome! She went to the cardiologist last week and was a GIANT 8 pounds 3 ounces! My arms are going to get so tired! She is just starting (now at 7 weeks) to grow out of her newborn clothes. Really it's her length that's growing out of her clothes, I guess she's long and skinny.

Also, she took her first road trip last Saturday. We went to Newberry to visit the Martins. Michael came with and we had lots of fun. She did great in the car for the hour and 45 minute drive. On the way back she was a little fussy, but once Michael went to the back to sit with her, she was quite content. She just likes company I guess.

And then the sad news of the week - this is my last week off work :( I will start back this coming Monday. Oh how I want to just stay home! But tis life I suppose. Hopefully Eric will land an awesome job in a year or two and I can work less! I'll be counting the days.

And the good news of the week. We had our Early Interventionist, Cindy, come by yesterday. Lilly did so good! Cindy was really happy with her progress. She's lifting her head up more and able to hold it up for longer periods of time. She's gripping onto stuff (not purposefully yet) really well too. She had quite the workout during her appointment, but it was actually pretty fun! She got pretty tired. I kinda feel bad, I should be working with her a little more, otherwise she wouldn't have gotten so tired. Oh well, we'll work a little better these next couple weeks. Oh and she even showed us some "baby massage"! I can tell Lilly is already getting to like that!

I will try to get Eric posting again, he's been a poor blogger lately (especially since he started this!). Okay okay, I guess he has had some hard math/engineering classes currently, but come on! Well, that's all for now I believe.

Par-Tay

So Sunday evening a surprise birthday bash was held for Rachel. It was for her big 3-0! She might hurt me for calling it a 30th birthday party! I think she told me she was actually turning 25? Doug arranged the whole thing and I must say I was very impressed. Kudos to Doug. It was a massive cookout at Sesqui Park and there were tons of friends and family. Lots of fun and good food. Here are a few memories.

We're trying to wean Eric off the pacifier...

Funny games we like to play with kids. That's why you have kids after all, right? Uncle Marshall with cousins Katie and Cole.

Lilly star gazing.

Put me down Uncle Eric!

Mari and "little" bro Michael. Nice braces dude.

Look no baby. She was held hostage once we got to the party.

Aunt Rachel and her FIRST ever (and coolest to be ever) niece Lilly.

Creative Writing Part Deux

So apparantly I married Robert Frost or maybe Walt Whitman... Anyway, this creative writing class is revealing Eric's true colors! Everytime I snoop in his assignment folder on the computer, he keeps saying oh that one's not very good. But they are all pretty awesome! This poem he wrote before I even put the previous post up! I had no idea, I guess great minds think alike. Enjoy!

Little Girl

I want to say thanks
To my little girl.

When we first met I was scared and unaware,
But now I know you are everything I wanted.

You weren't what I expected
you were just what I needed.

I want the best for you
you need the best from me.

I know the world will be amazed
to see you reach your potential.

You've already turned this average guy into a daddy.
Thanks to my little girl, your Daddy loves you.

It's What I Need

Driving in the car today, I finally understand what the Rolling Stones were talking about.

"You can't always get what you want, But if you try sometimes you might find, You get what you need"

I got what I need. Thanks Lilly.

Love,
Mommy

Intuition

Mari and I were talking yesterday and realized that we must have known Lilly had Down syndrome before she was born. Let's look at the facts:

1

We enrolled Lilly in the Montessori school for day care. We were very lucky to get her in as it is very difficult to get your kid in there. There's a waiting list already for the day care. She'll be able to grow up in the school and make lots of friends who will appreciate her for who she is rather than at a large school where she might get funny looks or stares from the kids that don't know her or worse yet get picked on. I would hate to have to beat up a second grader so I'm glad we don't have to worry about that. They also teach at each child's speed and can taylor to each of their learning styles. The student to teacher ratio is very small at the school so she'll get lots of personal attention.

2

We opted to do the cord blood thing. I'm not really sure why we did it, it was kinda expensive especially since I'm not working right now and Mari took off work for eight weeks for Lilly. But it was a definitely a good thing we did it because Lilly is more likely to get leukemia. Fortunately, with the cord blood it's going to make treatment that much easier if it were ever needed.

3

Lilly's Aunt Rachel got a bunch of awareness bracelets for the family. On them is the logo "Live, Laugh, Love". I guess it's a slogan or motto for the Down syndrome community. Anyway, did anyone notice that the slogan is three words that all start with L's and Lilly also has three L's?

Coincidence? Maybe. Intuition? I like to think so.
